Best Books to Read on Vacation

This week for my Spring 2019 Reading Challenge, we are going to look at a book that is set in a city you have been to. I was trying to think of the best way to do this for all of my international readers, and decided that I would find the top traveled to cities of 2018, and provide books from there. Bangkok, Thailand

A Marine sergeant is murdered under a Bangkok bridge inside a bolted-shut Mercedes Benz, and it is all seen by a group of witnesses. Among the witnesses are two cops…but one is murdered within the hour. The other, Sonchai Jitpleecheep is set on revenge. Bangkok 8 follows Jitpleecheep and his partner Jones, a beautiful FBI agent, as they go through the illegal and sinister world of underground Bangkok.

London, UK

Tom Hazard seems like an ordinary 41 year old man in London. He’s a high school history teacher and on his first day, meets the French teacher and is immediately smitten. There is only two problems: First, Tom has a disease that makes him age slowly, and he is several centuries old. He’s performed with Shakespeare, sailed with Captain Hook, and had drinks with Fitzgerald. Second, the Albatross Society that protects people like Tom, has one rule: Never Fall in Love.

Paris, France

It’s 1939, in the village of Carriveau, and Vianne Mauriac has just said goodbye to her husband as he goes into war. Shortly after her house is taken over and Vianne and her daughter are forced to live with the enemy. Starving and alone, Vianne must make impossible choices to keep her family alive. Meanwhile, Vianne’s sister Isabelle falls in love with Gaetan, who believes that the French can fight the Nazi’s. Then, he betrays her, and she joins the Resistance, and her world, and Vianne’s, will never be the same.

Dubai, UAE

Tim Callaghan is so excited when he gets the chance to go to Dubai as a Junior creative to film an advert. He is entranced by the beautiful futuristic city of Dubai. The city seems perfect, until a crew member is found dead. Tim will quickly learn that if something seems perfect, there is probably something deadly lurking under the facade.

Singapore

New Yorker Rachel Chu decides to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young. From what she knows about Nicholas, she is expecting a cozy home and time with her (hopefully) future husband and his family. But, Nicholas has failed to mention some things; first, his childhood home is a palace, two, his family car wasn’t a minivan but a private jet, and three, he is the country’s most wealthy and eligible bachelor. Oh, and his family is a bit crazy, and a lot rich. Rachel is in store for a much different summer than she expected.

New York City, USA

1943, our unnamed narrator meets Holly Golightly, both living in apartments on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Holly, an older teen, is a country girl turned cafe society girl. She doesn’t have a job, she uses men to get food and gifts, and eventually wants to marry one of them for permanent security. Holly is extremely outspoken and loves to shock others with facts about herself and her life, which the narrator is exposed through over a year in which the novel takes place.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 

Journalist Delonix Regia meets Omar in the middle of the Reformasi movement in Kuala Lumpur. As the world seems to crumble around them, they find peace within love, marriage, and parenthood. Then suddenly, their two year old daughter Alba is kidnapped, and Delonix has to come out of her bubble and into the world of Kuala Lumpur, where girls are trafficked.

Istanbul, Turkey

Priveldged Arda is is reclining in wealth since the death of his overbearing mother. He takes this time to reflect on his life and the life of his father, famous mathematician Mursel Ergenekon who was murdered when Arda was 14. Meanwhile, on the other side of Istanbul, Bedirhan has made the decision to pack his ten year career as a professional assassin. When Selcuk Altun, a family friend of Arda, begins to provide him clues on who killed his father, Arda and Mursel will become forever linked.

Tokyo, Japan

Mari is 19, and is waiting out the night in a Denny’s in Tokyo. Suddenly she meets a young man who says he knows her sister, and she sets out on a journey through the city at night. After Dark tells the story of a single night, where Mari meets models, prostitutes, mobsters, musicians, and all other manner of surreal things that happen at night in Tokyo.

  1. This is an interestin post as you have different books for different places around the world. I really want to read Murakami’s works, especially the book about the Tokyo Sarin Attack. He is an interesting author.
